What is Broadcast TV?
Drawing the largest American audiences, Broadcast Television is the most common form of TV in the United States. Broadcast channels are major legacy networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) and are sold within a Designated Market Area (DMA). Advertising on Broadcast TV is a high-reach medium; however, it cannot be targeted by city or zip codes. DMAs dictate which stations deliver the viewer’s news and what advertising they will see.
Broadcast vs Cable
On the other hand, Cable TV, delivers ads on channels like Animal Planet, AMC, and Comedy Central. Cable does not use public airwaves – instead, they charge viewers subscription fees for transmission. Although this method offers more targetability, it provides limited reach within each market.
Broadcast Targeting
Targeting is based on the programming your consumers are watching. MPP places each campaign to establish the best mix of programming to reach a particular demographic. See the example below.
Example: AOI Campaign Target Audience
Demographic: Women aged 25-54
Typical Programming for this demographic:
- Early Morning News (local 6 a.m. news, Good Morning America, Today Show)
- Daytime (local noon news, syndicated programming such as Dr. Phil)
- Evening News (local 5:30/6 p.m. news)
- Prime Access (Entertainment Tonight, Jeopardy)
- Late News (local 10/11 p.m. news)
Benefits of Broadcast Advertising
It's Free For Everyone
Broadcast channels use public airwaves to transmit programs to any user tuning in within that DMA.
Branding Machine
Your ads will take center stage within the programs we watch every week.
Broadcast TV Offers Significant Market Reach
If you need to spread the word to a lot of people, Broadcast TV is an excellent way to do it.
Consumers Are Habitual
Viewers have routines set up around watching specific live programming and shows (i.e., nightly news broadcasts, the latest episodes of reality TV shows).
- Your total out of pocket is $5,000 for a package valued at $10,000!
- $10,000 total value of Broadcast TV advertising lasting 2 – 4 weeks
- Spots may be bumped for a variety of reasons including breaking news, political advertising, and sell-out situations. If this occurs, MPP will rebook your spots in comparable or better programming
- Programming costs vary by DMA. The number of spots for each $10,000 schedule will also vary by market.
